E-Commerce Shop for WordPress

It’s been SOOOO long since I published a post. Between the css menu plugin development and the rest of my life, new posts have slipped through the cracks.

Let me rectify that now!

My current project is an e-commerce shop for WordPress. It’s being funded by Rich of www.cregy.net and www.cregy.co.uk . To Rich I humbly bow! Thanks :D It promises to be a great addition to the WordPress community.

A quick preview of the features that will be included in the first rewrite of the plugin:

*shop front highlighting newly added products (sounds familiar?)
*ajax shopping cart
*sidebar category(product) and product menus
*unlimited products
*unlimited categories
*customizable pagination for product listing
*multiple images using “greybox” technology
*template system
*paypal payment gateway utilizing Instant Payment Notification(IPN)
*customizable shipping options
*customizable tax options
*viewable orders in the admin
*integration into the existing WordPress user registration system
*single page checkout (keep your fingers crossed for this one!)

And that’s all I can remember for now.

I’ll keep you udated.

Best,
Sheri

Would there be, by any chance, the ability to pay with a gift certificate included in this shopping cart?

Not in the basic cart. But the Rich has big plans for this addition to wordpress. There are additions already being planned for the plugin ->business management, customer management, marketing, helpdesk. I just have to finish the basic cart! I’ll jot your suggestion down!

Thanks for the comment :)

Hi Etroo,

I can tell you I am working on this night and day. There are 2 components still to write with the basic shop - the basic shop has a little more than I had written about above. There are a number of options added as well as multiple thumbnail sizes of any chosen dimension, image cropping, overwriting. The shipping and tax areas are truly customizable - you write them and assign them - as many as you need. It includes 5 currencies to choose from, all formated properly ;) There will be basic marketing included by way of a customizable checkout “survey” form.

As to the additions - well, they will come over time.

Shortcoming (as of this writing) are shipping options and payment options.

Thanks for the link. I think I have seen this cart before and was impressed! A little competition…LOL

Hopefully not too much competion.

I would much prefer you come on board and work with us at Instinct to help improve the first and original WP e-Commerce plugin… that inspired Rich in the first place - yes I have emails to prove it ;-)

I wish Rich would collaborate with us on this one rather then re-create the wheel.

It would be much cooler if you guys launched the biz management stuff now and focused on that. Then we really could help one another out…

Hey Dan,

I was only joking about the competition. I know nothing about any politics, and would prefer not too. Just doing a job.

But your cart is very nice :) When I’ve finished my app, I’ll download yours and plug it in. I’ve resisted the urge to do so until it’s finished - I wouldn’t want to create a replica!

BTW, is your plugin GPL? I couldn’t find any licensing info in the download.

For all those interested, I found the answer to my license query above:

From Dan’s site:

Licensing and Legal Matters

WP e-commerce is not GPL. It is copyright and all rights reserved. However, it is absolutely free for download, use and non-commercial redistribution. Anything else is subject to prior written permission by myself. If you contact me, chances are I’ll say yes to any reasonable request. What this mean in practice: WP e-commerce is “free software”, in that it is absolutely free to download, free to use and even free to tinker with (although I typically would require any modifications made to it to be clearly indicated to potential users). What I do not want to see, though, is people grabbing a version of WP and WP e-commerce, packaging them together and selling them for $1000 (as they could do, with GPL software).
This software is provided “as is”, without any guarantee of warranty of any kind, nor could I ever be held liable for any damages it could do to your system.

Also for those interested, the shop Rich and I are producing is GPL.

Actually, a little competition might be nice and would aid in keeping all intentions on track. I for one have not had one e-mail response or admin assistance to any of my needs “at the other place”, even if it is the original. I just want a product that works properly. And. I hoped that I would get a little help for my money. Apparently the only help they give is if we give them even more money. I’m liking Open Source and GPL more and more every minute.

Sorry for the rant, but over at the forums (which don’t seem to work well either) many are frustrated with the needs that aren’t getting responses.

Hi Sheri and Dan

Sheri you’re right - stay away from the politics. As I will too.

Dan if you have a beef with me. Email me don’t do it this way. It seems most unprofessional.

Thanks

Rich

You are referring to some very old Data Sheri.. This is what it actually says on our site:

WP e-commerce is GPL friendly. We are currently exploring what GPL friendly license will suit us best - we are likely to use the same method as Akismet / we will offer a free version and a developer version. We are seeking advise from the guys at WordPress.

I have no beef with you Rich, in fact I wish you all the best. I find it sad that you would rather re-create the wheel then collaborate with us - I don’t think saying that is unprofessional… or political :P

Oh! Sorry. I found it here:

Thanks for replying. I’m happy you are going the GPL route. The app is sure to gain momentum that way. :)
